“The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it.”
A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.
Emphasis on technique is justified only so far as it will simplify and clarify the statement of the photographer’s concept.
There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.
Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.
Simply look with perceptive eyes at the world about you, and trust to your own reactions and convictions. Ask yourself: “Does this subject move me to feel, think and dream? Can I visualize a print – my own personal statement of what I feel and want to convey – from the subject before me?
I hope that my work will encourage self expression in others and stimulate the search for beauty and creative excitement in the great world around us. – Ansel Adams
When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silent.
“The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible”
“I really don’t have any idea about photography, but I take pictures.”
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
“There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oops! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever.”
Henri Cartier Bresson
“There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.”
“I always thought good photos were like good jokes. If you have to explain it, it just isn’t that good.”
“A photograph is the pause button on life.”
“If you’re photographing in color you show the color of their clothes – if you use black and white, you will show the color of their soul.”
“One photo out of focus is a mistake, ten photos out of focus are an experimentation, one hundred photos out of focus are a style.”
“A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.”
“A camera is a tool for learning how to see without a camera.”
“Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field.”
